Hi Kait! Sorry to hear that you had major trouble! My goodness - a whole hour in the mixer and then it started smoking?? That is too bad. Just curious...what type of milk/cream did you use - and was it straight out of the fridge or room temp or what?

Okay, mine was a colossal failure! I had it in the mixer for an hour until the motor started to smoke and it got a bit frothy but never started to form chunks. What went wrong? I was so excited about this!

[I responded way earlier than this, but it wasn't showing up right in the thread here...]

I’ve read lots that ‘lactose intolerant’ folks can drink fresh milk with no probs whatsoever! =-D

Are you asking about the leftover milk that I squeeze out of the butter? I save aaaaaall of that because it is REALLY great buttermilk for baking! Seriously. You wouldn’t think that something so basic could totally change a recipe, but I notice a big difference in all of my baked goods with fresh buttermilk! Just keep it in a mason jar in the fridge.

WHOOO WEEE! $15 a gallon! Whew. Gracious. I am also thinking that somewhere up North, there are cow share programs that help make it more affordable. That might be something worth looking into. I hope that you find fresh milk that doesn't cost a small fortune!

Cinnamon butter? I've not tried that yet but how tasty would that be? YUM! And yes - I'd just add in the cinnamon and eat it up! ...On toast or something, of course. ;-D

Soooooo glad you found me so I could find you! I'm in IL and prices for raw milk around me are around $15 a gallon, and that's looking at farmers through the realmilk website. I've been meaning to join a Weston A Price chapter near me (love me some Nourishing Traditions!!), maybe this will inspire me to do so. I'm really looking forward to browsing your site. :)

Great post, I have it bookmarked and will pass it on to family and friends who ask about "Real Milk."

Christina ~ wow!! That is so pricey! I have heard of high prices like that up North. Our family currently pays $6 a gallon...and we are going through 4 gallons a week.

I think you would be better off finding a good local farmer and buying straight from him. Have you checked the RealMilk website yet?
